The history of paintball
by Angie Loewen
Paintball started in may of 1981 in New Hampshire, and was said to be created by 3 men, Bob Gursey a sporting goods retailer, Hayes Noel a stockbroker, and Charles Gains a writer. The first game of paintball was played on June 27th of 1981, and the game was a capture the flag format. 12 players played with nelspot 007 pistols and the game was won by a man capturing the flag without firing a single shot! In April of 1982, the first outdoor playing field was opened in Rochester, N.Y., by Caleb Stong. Also in 1982, Chales Gains marketed paintball as the national survival game (NSG), and PMI (Pursuit Marketing Inc.) was founded and began to distribute paintball products. In 1983, the first NSG National Championshipswas held with a $14,000 cash budget. Also, Toronto opened outdoor playing fields. In 1984, paintball started in Australia under the name of Skirmish Games. In November of 1984, Caleb Strong opened the first indoor playing field in Buffalo N.Y. In 1985, England opened their first outdoor playing field. In 1988, the IPPA (International Paintball Players Association) was founded as a non profit organization dedicated to the education, safety and growth of the sport of paintball. In 1991, paintball began to spread to other European countries such as Denmark, France and many other countries. From 1992-1993, the NPPL (National Professional Paintball League) was founded and the NPPL Pro- Am Series started around the United States. In 1996, paintball had grown immensely and stores, fields and tournaments could now be found in Canada, the United States, Australia, England, Scotland, Denmark, France, Holland, Germany, Austria, Ireland, Belgium, Greece, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Africa, Russia, New Zealand, Brazil, Venezuela, Israel, Korea, Thailand and the Philippines. From 1997-1999 Electro-Pneumatic markers came out. The PVI Shocker, WDP Angel, Smart Parts Shocker Sport, Brass Eagle Rainmaker, ICD Bushmaster 2000 and Bob Long Delta Defiant give a serious challenge to the long time dominating Airgun Designs Automag and WGP Autococker. From 1999-2003 Paintball is growing at a steady rate of at least 30% per year. The tournament scene has grown rapidly and is still growing all over the world! Paintball has taken to the internet with many different web sites to purchase paintball products, learn about the sport and watch videos as well. The sport of paintball has progressed immensely over the years. It is a great sport and is played today in over 40 countries by millions of people. In the last 15 years or so, paintball has become one of the most recognized outdoor participation sports. It is in the top 3 of the extremes sports in North America today, just under skateboarding and above artificial wall climbing.

The game of paintball is generally played in the form of “capture the flag” or elimination. The format is usually 2 teams of one to two, five or seven or ten, or even over 1,000 players on a side depending on the size of the field (usually more in scenario games). Paintball is a sport that is played by people of all different professions and lifestyles. It is a sport where people of all ages and sexes can compete equally. Paintball is a game of strategy, very much like Chess. Being able to think quickly and decisively will help with your ability to play the game. Some key success in the sport of paintball are intelligence and determination, not merely strength, speed or agility. It is a character-building sport and will help people to learn about teamwork, gain self esteem and also develop leadership abilities while being able to have a great time with friends and family and relieve stress. Paintball is a very safe sport to play as well. Some safety issues are that all players must wear goggles specifically designed for paintball to protect their eyes. These goggles must be worn at all times while playing, and at all times while barrel plugs are not on the markers (such as in the chronograph area or target range). The goggles also consist of a protective facemask to protect all areas of the face and ears. As long as the safety rules are followed, paintball is one of the safest sports out there, even safer than bowling! Her are some stats to show the accident rates for some sports such as paintball, bowling, golf, and baseball: paintball has a 0.31 per 1000 accident rate bowling has a 0.50 per 1000 accident rate golf has a 1.13 per 1000 accident rate baseball has a 27.67 per 1000 accident rate (PaintCheck Magazine, June 1989, page 38) Some people also want to know what a paintball is so here goes! A paintball is a round thin skinned gelatin capsule with a concord liquid filling. Paintballs are similar to large round vitamin capsules or bath oil beads. In fact, the shells are made from the same substance that our vitamin capsules are made of. Paintballs are environmentally safe. They are non-toxic, non-caustic, water-soluble and biodegradable. The paint from a paintball should rinse off clothing and skin with mild soap and water. Another question to answer is what is a paintball marker??? A paintball marker comes in many different types, some pumps, mechanical and some electronic. Paintball markers have many different types of operations such as closed bolt, open bolt, blowback and blow forward. Paintball markers must be powered by either C02 (Carbon Dioxide, N2 (Nitrogen) or Compressed Air. Most players use large refillable cylinders that give hundreds of shots before needing to be refilled, and some use small 12 gram CO2 cartridges that give off anywhere from 15-30 shots.
